Waste & Water Mains

Your home’s main sewer line runs underground, which can make it difficult to spot signs of damage. Because of this, small issues often go undetected until they turn into major problems — a simple crack can eventually lead to a full collapse. Being able to recognize the warning signs of a broken sewer line can help protect your property and prevent costly repairs.

A broken sewer line refers to any damage affecting the pipe that transports wastewater from your home to the city’s sewer system.

Common causes include aging pipes, corrosion, tree root intrusion, and other typical sewer-related issues. When a sewer line fails, it can lead to unpleasant odors and frequent drain backups. In more severe cases, wastewater may flood your yard or back up into sinks, tubs, and other fixtures — causing serious property damage and creating potential health hazards. Here are key signs that may indicate a broken sewer line:

  • sewage back ups - emerging from basements, floor drains, toilets & tubs

  • gurgling drains from toilets & pipes

  • slow drains - if mulitple sinks, toilets and tubs throughout are draining slowly

  • Frequent back ups

  • foul odors - often noticed first in the basement or utility room

  • lush or over saturated patches of grass

  • foundation damage as a persistant leak can wash away the soil supporting

  • but where is your sewer line in the yard?

  • Cleanouts are typically at the property line or close to your foundation

  • You can check with your city’s public works dept

But who pays?

Check with your local municipality however typically

“(1) In each case the owner must call and pay the plumber for the investigation. The City will reimburse the owner appropriately upon submission of a copy of the paid plumber's invoice.

(2) The City will pay a maximum of $175 (taxes included) towards the paid plumber's bill once every three (3) years.

(3) The City will pay half the paid plumber's bill up to a maximum of $87.50 (taxes included) once every three (3) years.”

It's a good idea to check whether your insurance policy covers broken sewer lines, as some policies may include specific types of damage. Coverage often depends on the cause — issues such as age, normal wear and tear, or corrosion are not always covered.

If you’re facing a sewer line issue, we’re happy to provide a detailed quote to help you understand the potential costs involved. Additionally, check with your local municipality to see if they offer a sanitary sewer rebate program, which could help offset some of the repair expenses.

A burst water main can cause widespread disruption, affecting entire neighborhoods, forcing businesses to shut down temporarily, blocking roads, and leaving homes without water. In some cases, it can even lead to significant property damage.

While the inconvenience is felt immediately, the repair process may take longer than expected.

So, how long does it actually take to fix a water main break?

Although crews typically respond quickly and work diligently, the timeline for repairs isn’t always clear-cut.

Several factors influence how long it takes to fix a burst water main, and in this post, we’ll explore some of them.

Water mains aren’t limited to underground locations — they often run beneath roads, across properties, and even under buildings.

Unlike fixing a burst pipe inside a home, repairing a damaged water main is often far more complicated due to its location. In the worst cases, what might seem like a simple fix can take not just hours, but days — or even longer — to resolve.
